Discounts and Rebates
Perth residents can access significant upfront discounts for solar and batteries through the federal SRES scheme and the WA Residential Battery Scheme, which offers rebates up to ~$5,000 and interest-free loans.
Ongoing financial support includes the $150 National Energy Bill Relief for all households, specific annual payments for concession card holders, and the DEBS feed-in tariff for selling excess power to the grid.
Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)
The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) is a federal Australian government initiative that significantly reduces the upfront cost of installing eligible systems—such as solar PV panels, solar water heaters, and heat pumps—for households and small businesses in Perth. Rather than functioning as a cash rebate that you claim later, the scheme operates by creating “Small-scale Technology Certificates” (STCs) based on your system’s location and expected energy generation; typically, your solar installer claims these certificates on your behalf and deducts their value directly from your invoice, resulting in an immediate discount that can amount to thousands of dollars. For a standard 6.6kW solar system installed in Perth before December 31, 2025, the subsidy is approximately $2,050–$2,160; however, in January 2026, it would be roughly $ 1,710. For more information, you can check the Clean Energy Regulator – Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.
WA Residential Battery Scheme
The WA Residential Battery Scheme is a state government initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of home energy storage for Synergy customers in Perth. As of late 2025, the scheme provides a direct state rebate of up to $1,300 (calculated at $130 per kWh for a standard 10kWh battery), which can be stacked with the federal “Cheaper Home Batteries” subsidy to reach a combined discount of approximately $5,000 off the upfront cost. In addition to these rebates, eligible households with a combined annual income of less than $210,000 can access an interest-free loan of up to $10,000 to cover the remaining balance, repayable over up to 10 years. To qualify for both the rebate and the loan, you must install an approved battery system, agree to join a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), and have the application lodged on your behalf by an accredited retailer rather than yourself.
National Energy Bill Relief for households & small businesses
The National Energy Bill Relief for households is a federal cost-of-living initiative that provides eligible Perth residents with a total of $150 to help cover electricity costs in late 2025. Although the federal government generally describes this as two separate $75 quarterly installments for households, for most Synergy customers in Western Australia, this relief is delivered as a single, one-off lump-sum credit of $150, applied to eligible accounts on 11 October 2025. To qualify automatically, you needed to hold an active residential electricity account as of 30 September 2025; however, if you live in an embedded network such as an apartment complex or retirement village and do not receive a bill directly from Synergy, you are still eligible. Still, you must manually apply for the payment via the RevenueWA website before applications close on 31 March 2026.
Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Program
Under the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), all Australian homeowners are eligible for Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STC).
For every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (KWh) of estimated production between its installation date and 2030, solar power systems are awarded one STC. These credits can then be sold to electricity retailers, who have the legal obligation to purchase them under the Renewable Energy Target from the Clean Energy Regulator. Each STC sells for around $35 to $40.
Household Electricity Credit (ECES)
The Household Electricity Credit (ECES) is a specific version of the government’s $150 energy bill relief, designed for Western Australian households that do not receive a direct electricity bill from a retailer such as Synergy or Horizon Power. This credit targets residents living in “embedded networks,” such as retirement villages, caravan parks, and apartment complexes where a strata or management company supplies electricity. If you were already registered for the Energy Concession Extension Scheme (ECES) by 30 September 2025, the $150 payment is deposited automatically into your bank account; however, if you are eligible but not yet registered, you must manually apply via the RevenueWA Online Services Portal before 31 March 2026 and provide a copy of an invoice showing you incurred electricity costs on the eligibility date.
